Perelada Finca La Garriga · 2021
Finca La Garriga is one of the three great wines, together with Finca Malaveïna and Finca Espolla, from the Castillo de Perelada estate, made 100% from the indigenous variety Samsó (or Cariñena), originating from vines aged more than fifty years old. Its marked varietal personality, its minerality (especially on the nose) and its freshness mean that, when tasted blind, it can easily be mistaken for a Priorat, although one of the smoother Priorats. The ease with which a wine of this maturity, intensity and complexity can be drunk is astonishing; overall, it is a tremendously fresh, palatable and powerful wine, with aromas seemingly fighting each other to be released from the glass. It regales us with ripe fruit aromas, of sweet fruit, rich tertiary notes (mushrooms, earth) and a gentle menthol freshness; a complex wine. Captivated by that explosion of aromas, it succeeds in seducing us on the palate: a juicy, intense, dense but dry entry, with hints of orange peel... provide confirmation of a serious, elegant wine. Although not offering on the palate the same complexity as on the nose, the fruit is chewy (strawberry and red fruit in particular), it is fleshy, and offers a warm ensemble, with great intensity, spicy notes on a lightly mineral background and subtle ageing notes (for those accustomed to French oak, we need to point out that this wine is aged in American oak barrels!). All the way through the tasting, it gives the impression of containing a restrained powerfulness, enabling us to enjoy every sip, without ever growing tired of it, right to the end.

About the vineyard[+]
The Legacy of Empordà The Empordà wine region, located in the north-eastern corner of Catalonia, is a magical corner where the Mediterranean sea breeze intertwines with ancient vines, giving its wines a unique flavour and character. With centuries of winemaking tradition, Empordà embodies the passion and spirit of the Mediterranean. An Unforgettable Flavour Empordà wines are a reflection of its diverse terroir: from sandy coasts to rocky hills. This variety of soils gives rise to intense red wines, aromatic whites and vibrant rosés. Between the Sea and the Mountains The influence of the sea and the mountains creates a special microclimate in Empordà, giving rise to wines with fresh acidity and surprising complexity. Each glass evokes landscapes of olive trees, golden beaches and charming villages. When mention is made of Empordà and the Costa Brava, a picture comes to mind of a landscape shaped by the wind, the sea and the Pyrenees, providing the vines with a wonderfully picturesque setting in which to flourish. Located in the far north-east of Catalonia and bordering France, first the Phoenicians and then later the Greeks, with settlements in Empúries and Roses, were responsible for introducing vine cultivation to the area. The region has traditionally found fame for producing sweet Garnacha wines. However, in the 1990s young oenologists came to realize the enormous possibilities presented by the region's terroir and opted for making good quality still wines using the region's customary grape varieties blended with foreign ones. Therefore, the locally-grown Garnacha, Cariñena and Garnacha Blanca were joined by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay, which imbue the wine with a very distinctive mineral character due to the granite and slate soil. If there is a climatic feature that typifies the Empordà apart from the obvious Mediterranean influence, it has to be the strong north wind that frequently blows in this area: the Tramontana, which cools down the summer heat and helps to ripen off the grapes. As regards the soil type, it is poor and sandy on the plains, while on the Pyrenean slopes and the Cap de Creus, the vines are planted on terraces with granite and slate soil. This results in wines with more personality. Our Careful Selection Our catalogue of Empordà wines has been carefully selected to offer you only the best of this region. Each bottle tells a story, and we are sure you will find the one that resonates with you.
