Passopisciaro Passorosso · 2024
Passorosso starts out life on Etna, at an altitude ranging between 500 and 1,100 metres above sea level. It comes from vineyards that are nearly a hundred years old and planted with the Nerello Mascalese variety. On the Sicilian wine-producing scene, Etna is a unique and beautiful region which not only offers a landscape that is both surreal and stunning, but also wines with an elegance, finesse and minerality that prove difficult to find in other reds produced on the island. In addition, there's a special concentration of primary aromas in the wines resulting from the big difference in day and night temperatures. Passorosso, which is the Passopisciaro's entry wine, is obtained from Nerello Mascalese grapes originating from various locations within the Etna Cru. Appearing a magnificent and bright ruby colour, in the glass it emanates enticing fruit and spicy aromas, red fruits, violets, pepper and aromatic herbs, that work wonderfully well with the delightful minerality. On the palate, its freshness and crisp texture precede red fruits that seem chewy, particularly red currant and cherry. Tannins are present on a palate that flows smoothly, cleanly and easily, and ends with a long finish exhibiting pleasant mineral hints.

About the vineyard[+]
Etna is not only one of the most active volcanoes in Europe but also lies at the heart of a prestigious wine region on the island of Sicily. This majestic volcano gives its name to the Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC) of the wines produced on its slopes. Grape Varieties Etna's wines are noted for their indigenous varieties. The undisputed stars are Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio for reds and rosés, while Carricante shines for whites. These varieties, grown in the unique terroir of Etna, offer unparalleled aromatic and taste profiles. The Volcanic Terroir One of the singularities of Etna DOC wines is their volcanic terroir. The volcanic soil, full of minerals, brings a characteristic minerality to the wines, giving them a distinctive character not found in other regions. Types of Wine Etna produces red, white and rosé wines. Each with a unique character, but all bear the distinctive stamp of Etna's minerality, a reflection of the volcanic soil and Mediterranean climate that prevails in the region. Altitude Viticulture The slopes of Etna are the setting for altitude viticulture. The vines benefit from the thermal variations offered by this altitude, resulting in wines with remarkable freshness and complexity.
