Cariñena is living a second life. More precise, more honest, more aware of what it holds. And Mancuso is a great example of this. Behind it is Jorge Navascués, one of the winemakers who best understands the true potential of this denomination: old vines, extreme climate, poor soils, and an identity that needs no disguise. His work here is clear and without artifice: letting the vineyard speak and not getting in the way. The result has also convinced international critics, with scores that confirm the qualitative leap that DO Cariñena is experiencing when worked with rigor and sensitivity. In the glass, it's a direct and well-defined red, with clear red fruit, spicy notes, and a mineral background that brings tension and length. On the palate, it's fluid, balanced, and very drinkable, with that freshness sought in well-made wines today. It doesn't aim to be grandiose, but convincing. A wine that proves Cariñena is not the past, but a well-understood present. And that in the right hands, it can offer wines with character, honesty, and an unbeatable quality-price ratio.

About the vineyard[+]

This is Aragón's largest vine-growing area and one of Spain's first to be demarcated, in 1933. The Romans founded the town of Carae (Cariñena) in 50 B.C and established winemaking on a commercial basis. During the Middle Ages, wine production flourished under the protection of the local monasteries and achieved great fame. The town may have given its name to the black grape variety, Cariñena, but surprisingly it is not the region's dominant variety which is the Garnacha Tinta . Although traditionally this area has produced high alcohol, robust wines sold in bulk and used for adding strength to other wines, back in the 1990s there was a move towards quality. Bottling became more prevalent as a way to break into new markets, calling for more elegant, fruity and fresh wines. The region is located in the centre of Zaragoza province, right in the heart of the Ebro valley, with a continental climate and fairly low rainfall. The soils are rather lacking in nutrients and mainly of reddish-brown limestone that retains water well.
