Finca Antigua Syrah · 2020
Finca Antigua Syrah 2019 is a robust and elegant red wine produced by the Finca Antigua winery, located in the Denominación de Origen La Mancha, one of Spain's oldest and most extensive wine regions. This wine is a single varietal Syrah, a grape that adapts exceptionally well to the arid, continental climate of La Mancha, offering a unique expression of this varietal. The 2019 vintage was characterised by a climatic balance that allowed for optimal ripening of the grapes, reflected in the quality and character of the wine. Finca Antigua Syrah 2019 was carefully fermented and then matured in American and French oak barrels for a period of 10 months, a process that gives it remarkable complexity and a well-defined tannic structure. Visually, this wine presents a deep, dark red colour with violet hues. On the nose, it displays an intense aromatic range, dominated by aromas of black fruits such as blackberries and plums, accompanied by spicy notes and a slight hint of vanilla and chocolate, the result of its ageing in barrels. On the palate, Finca Antigua Syrah 2019 is powerful and full, with a firm entry and a mid-palate where ripe fruit flavours combine harmoniously with soft tannins and balanced acidity. The finish is long and lingering, with an aftertaste where spices and cocoa come back to the fore. This wine is ideal to accompany roasted red meat dishes, complex stews and cured cheeses. Its robustness and elegance make it an excellent candidate for cellaring, and it can evolve favourably in the bottle for several years.

About the vineyard[+]
Located between the autonomous region of Madrid and Andalucía, La Mancha is the largest vine-growing region in the world. Its vineyards cover a vast area of land that includes the provinces of Toledo, Cuenca, Ciudad Real and Albacete. Despite the fact that many cooperatives continue to operate in bulk and table wine production, an ever-increasing number of wineries are aiming for quality and bottling their wines in order to compete on an equal footing with other Spanish regions. The most widely-grown black grape variety is the Cencibel (Tempranillo) that produces meaty, warm wines. As for white, production has been based on the indigenous variety Airén which results in light, fresh, fruity wines. More recently, foreign varieties have been added to achieve better balance. There is little variation in altitude and soil type within this DO, and along with the extreme continental climate so characteristic of the region, the result is a relatively uniform aspect to flavour, aroma and texture, but with subtle distinctions achieved by the wine producer's own expertise. It is due to the oenologists, vine growers and modern techniques introduced into cultivation and production that in recent years, wines have improved dramatically in quality and can now compete with the best wines both nationally and internationally.
