Dominio del Bendito El Primer Paso · 2024

Fruit-forward, complex, seductive... a wine with a very good price-quality ratio and a perfect example of a fine Toro wine, characterful and authentic. This is El Primer Paso de Dominio del Bendito, a very appropriate name (as the ‘First Step’ into this Toro range) and one which we prefer to its former name (the ‘Roble’), with all its connotations of oak, especially because this winery does not barrel age to give aromatic nuances, a concept which Anthony Terryn is keen to avoid, but to enable slow maturing of the wine, so that it gains in complexity. A great idea. This Primer Paso has just left the winery but it is ready to be enjoyed now - a great virtue of the Tinta de Toro grape variety when handled well. Intense fruit, explosive, shows off its vibrant character not only in the colour (lively, bright, intense, glycerine) but also on the nose and palate; the fruit is, at every stage, predominant (blackberries and blueberries), so there is no lack of complexity due to its density. It is a complex wine: those first aromas of fresh fruit and warm earth, lovely, evolve in the glass to give way to notes of oak ageing in very good measure (toasty nuances, coffee, spices, hazelnuts, liquorice) complemented by a subtle minerality and a pleasant touch of sweetness. Delicious. Its excellent acidity and its noticeable but velvety tannins (extraordinary in a 2010!) allow the wine to caress the palate as well as show body and power on the palate, definitely full-bodied. Primer Paso de Dominio del Bendito is juicy, elegant, rounded - a serious wine with character. Don’t let its 15 per cent worry you, as you don’t notice it, and if you can get a few bottles to put away in the right conditions for a few years, then do so; you won’t regret it. NOTE: We recommend decanting the wine half an hour beforehand so that it can display all its virtues to the full.

About the vineyard[+]

Toro: Castilla y León's Wine Legacy Here is another of Spain's viticultural discoveries of recent times. Located in the heart of Castilla y León, the Toro appellation has gained international recognition for its powerful and expressive wines. This region, bathed by the Duero River, is home to ancient vineyards that have been the mainstay of its winemaking tradition for centuries. Until a little more than 10 years ago, Toro's wines were virtually unknown outside their own area and they were considered rather rough and very tannic. Today the scene has changed completely and, while it is true that the wines continue to be as well-structured and powerful as ever, it is also the case that efforts in the vineyard, employing modern equipment in production processes, and a change of philosophy when it comes to understanding the new-style Toro wines, have all contributed to bringing these products to the favourable notice of the national and international press. A red from Toro is a must-have on any good wine rack. Intensity and Character Toro wines are known for their intensity, richness and concentration, largely thanks to the indigenous Tinta de Toro variety. This grape, perfectly adapted to the continental climate and sandy, stony soils, produces full-bodied red wines with deep fruity aromas and well-structured tannins. Just like in neighbouring Ribera del Duero, Toro basically works with one single grape variety, the Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) which is the essential ingredient and shining star of this region. Distinguishing itself from other Tempranillo wines from different regions, the wines here stand out as having more body, alcoholic strength and structure yet also for being more silky and velvety-textured which, when blended well with toasty barrel notes, produces wines of great elegance. Climate and Terroir: Perfect Combination Toro's combination of cold winters, hot summers and low rainfall, together with its unique terroir, favours the production of wines with a very marked identity, where power is balanced with elegance. Located in the southeast of Zamora province, right in the midst of Castile-León's central plateau, the local climate is extremely continental, with short but hot summers and large diurnal temperature fluctuations. There is also the gently undulating, dry terrain, with brownish-grey limestone and alluvial soils, yet another of the factors determining the wine's character.
