About the vineyard[+]
The Denomination of Origin Tarragona is one of the most extensive in Catalonia: it identifies and protects the wines produced in more than seventy municipalities located mainly in the regions of Camp de Tarragona and part of Ribera d'Ebre. It produces high quality red, white and rosé wines, but it is especially known for the production of sweet wines and traditional liqueur wines: its famous mistelas and rancio wines (liqueur wines with oxidative aging in the sun), its Grenache or Muscatel sweets, and the well-known 'mass wine', exported to several countries. The soil of the area is mostly calcareous, lighter in the Camp de Tarragona region and more stony in the Ribera d'Ebre. The climate is essentially Mediterranean, with cold winters, hot and very bright summers, and an average annual rainfall of between 400-500 mm. As far as the wines are concerned, there are up to 16 authorized grape varieties, 8 red and 8 white. The red wines are firm and aromatic while the rosés are fresh and of a beautiful cherry color. The white wines are smooth and delicately aromatic, somewhat brighter in Ribera d'Ebre. The DO Tarragona is an extraordinary appellation to find wines for all publics at much lower prices than in neighboring areas.
